Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
l am an 18-year-old girl. Last year l was diagnosed with UTl (urinary tract infection) and l got treatment. But two days back l started noticing the same signs l had last year. Is it normal for it to happen more than once or should I be worried? Please suggest.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern regarding your recent symptoms.
Recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs) are not uncommon, especially in individuals who have previously experienced them. UTIS can reoccur if the underlying cause or risk factors have not been fully addressed. Some common risk factors for recurrent UTIs include inadequate treatment, incomplete antibiotic courses, sexual activity, certain contraceptive methods, and anatomical abnormalities. If you are experiencing similar signs and symptoms as you did last year, it's important to start medication, which is prescribed for a UTI, depending on the specific bacteria causing the infection and its severity. Commonly prescribed antibiotics for UTIs may include:
1. Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim): This is a commonly used antibiotic for UTIs.
2. Nitrofurantoin (Macrobid): This medication is often prescribed for uncomplicated UTIs and is not effective against other types of infections.
3. Ciprofloxacin (Cipro): This antibiotic is typically reserved for more severe cases or when other antibiotics are ineffective.
4. Amoxicillin: This is another antibiotic that may be prescribed for UTIs.
Urinary alkalisers are medications that increase the pH of urine, making it more basic or alkaline. These medications are sometimes used to help manage certain conditions, such as urinary tract infections or kidney stones. The purpose of using urine alkalisers is to change the pH level of urine, as it can potentially help prevent the formation of certain types of kidney stones and reduce discomfort associated with acidic urine. By making urine more alkaline, it may also enhance the effectiveness of certain antibiotics in treating urinary tract infections. I suggest you do the urine routine and culture tests.
I hope this helps you.
Thank you.
