Is Tezepelumab effective only for eosinophilic asthma?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been dealing with severe asthma for several years and have tried different biological treatments, including Xolair and Dupixent, with limited success. My doctor recently mentioned Tezspire(Tezepelumab) as a new option, but I would like to understand how it compares to other biologics. How does Tezspire work differently from other biological treatments for asthma? I understand that it targets thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) instead of interleukin-4 (IL-4) or immunoglobulin E (IgE) pathways—does this make it more effective for certain types of asthma? One of my main concerns is how quickly I can expect to see improvement after starting Tezspire. Does it significantly reduce asthma attacks and the need for oral steroids? Additionally, does it help with reducing inflammation and long-term lung function decline? Are there any specific side effects or risks associated with Tezspire that I should be aware of? Lastly, is this treatment only effective for eosinophilic asthma, or can it help patients with other asthma phenotypes as well? I want to make an informed decision before switching to Tezspire, so I would appreciate any insights on its effectiveness and benefits.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Tezspire (Tezepelumab) treats both allergic and eosinophilic asthma by targeting a molecule called thymic stromal lymphopoietin TLSP (thymic stromal lymphopoietin).Tezspire plays a central role in activating various immune cells, contributing to the pathophysiology of asthma. It prevents TSLP from binding to its receptor and disrupts this in the inflammatory cascade associated with asthma.

Dupixent has an average rating of 7.2 out of 10 from a total of 493 ratings. 61 percent of reviewers reported a positive effect, while 21 percent reported a negative effect. Tezspire has an average rating of 8.7 out of 10 from a total of 34 ratings. There is a 56 percent reduction in asthma attacks compared to people not taking Tezspire.

Tezspire side effects-

  1. Hives.

  2. Back pain.

  3. Injection site reaction.

  4. Sore throat.

  5. Breathing problems.

  6. Red, irritated, or itchy eyes.

  7. Severe dizziness.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
