Can Semaglutide help reduce weight?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 38-year-old man who has struggled with weight all my life. Currently 315 lbs at 5‘10". I have tried everything - diets, personal trainers, and even surgery. My cousin recently lost 70 pounds using compounded Semaglutide from a pharmacy that advertises on social media. It is way cheaper than the prescription versions and does not require insurance approval. But I am concerned about safety. Is compounded Semaglutide regulated the same way as Wegovy? I have heard some people experience serious digestive issues - how common is that? My main health concerns are high blood pressure (160/95) and sleep apnea, which my doctor says would improve with weight loss. Would you recommend trying the compounded version, or should I fight with insurance for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved medication? Do I need any tests before starting? I am desperate for change but do not want to risk my health.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

According to your medical history and your concern regarding treatment with tablet Semaglutide (Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist), first I want you to explain in complete detail about Semaglutide, its mechanism of action, how it works, benefits, possible side effects, etc.

Semaglutide:

  1. It is a Glucagon-like peptide receptor agonist (GLP-1RA).

  2. It mimics the function of the body’s natural GLP1 hormone.

  3. This plays a vital role in regulating the blood sugar level by stimulating insulin production and suppressing glucagon (a hormone that raises blood sugar levels).

  4. It works by imitating the effects of the GLP1 hormone.

  5. It also prevents the liver from producing excess glucose thus aiding in maintaining a balanced blood sugar level.

    Benefits of Semaglutide:

    1. Studies have shown that Semaglutide can effectively decrease blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes.

    2. It has also been associated with weight loss, as an added advantage for individuals with type 2 diabetes who are overweight or obese.

      Side effects of Semaglutide:

      1. Nausea.

      2. Vomiting.

      3. Diarrhea.

      4. Abdominal pain.

I think I explained most of Semaglutide. So do not take it on the advice of any random pharmacy.

If you want to start Semaglutide now you need to get your blood tested before developing any metabolic abnormalities and other adverse effects. I suggest you undergo the following blood tests:

        1. Random blood sugar (RBS).

        2. Complete blood count (CBC).

        3. Liver function test (LFT).

        4. Renal function test (RFT).

        5. Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c).

Kindly consult a specialist doctor, talk with them, and take medications with their consent.

          I hope this helps.

          Thank you.
