At what age does a child needs pneumococcal vaccine shots?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My three-year-old son needs his routine vaccinations, including the pneumococcal vaccine. Why is it important for young children? What does pneumococcal disease do, and how effective is the vaccine? I have heard there are multiple doses. How many shots does he need, and at what ages?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Pneumococcal disease is an infection caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria, which can lead to severe illnesses like sinusitis, pneumonia, and meningitis. Symptoms vary by condition: sinusitis may cause a runny nose and congestion, pneumonia can lead to fever, cough, and shortness of breath, while meningitis may present with headache, fever, and seizures (a sudden, uncontrolled burst of electrical activity in the brain). High-risk groups include those with cochlear implants, cerebrospinal fluid leaks, diabetes, kidney disorders, immunocompromised conditions, children, and the elderly.

Vaccination is recommended for children and individuals over 65 years to prevent pneumococcal disease. For young children, the pneumococcal vaccine (PCV13 or PCV20) is given in a series: the first dose at two months, the second at four months, the third at six months, and a booster between 12-15 months. By 15 months, your child should have received four doses. Vaccination helps safeguard health, and discussing any concerns with a healthcare provider is always beneficial.

Please let me know if there is anything else that I can help you with.

Thank you.
