Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My uncle, aged 67, had a fever, sneezing, cold, and mild cough for the past few days. We got him tested, and the doctor said that my uncle had tested positive for pneumococcal infection. So, my uncle is under antibiotics right now.
How long will it take to treat this?
How to find that he is completely recovered?
Should I follow any precautionary measures to stay away from this infection?
How can he improve his immunity to prevent such infections in the future?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
You described that your uncle is suffering from pneumococcal pneumonia. Pneumonia is to be dealt with seriously, particularly in the elderly age group. Dangerous signs that need to be observed in case of pneumonia patients:
1. Persistent fever that is non-responsive to tablets.
2. If it is associated with new onset shortness of breath or worsening of pre-existing shortness of breath.
The occurrence of pneumonia is very common in children and the elderly. It can occur easily in them since they are more immunocompromised as compared with adults. It can be caused by both bacteria and viruses.
Treatment includes steam, antibiotics, adequate hydration, proper temperature regulation, and adequate nutrition. With appropriate treatment, the patient will feel better in five to seven days.
For further prevention of the pneumonia:
1. Regular vaccination should be given two to four weeks after recovery from pneumonia, including COVID-19, pneumococcal, and influenza vaccinations, if not taken already.
2. Regular follow-up with the pulmonologists.
3. Maintain an active and healthy lifestyle.
4. Ensure the consumption of a balanced and nutritious diet.
5. Adequate control of co-morbid conditions like diabetes etc, if present.
Kindly consult a physician, discuss with them, and start taking the medications with their consent.
I hope I have answered your question.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards.
