Are there any lifestyle changes to protect kidney?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had lupus nephritis for over a year, and lately, I have been noticing more swelling in my legs and face. I feel exhausted all the time, and my urine seems much foamier than before. My recent lab tests showed my protein levels have increased, and my kidney function seems to be getting worse. I am already taking Mycophenolate and Prednisone, but I am worried my kidneys are still deteriorating. Should we adjust my medications or consider other treatments? Are there any lifestyle changes, like diet or exercise, that could help protect my kidneys better?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Your worsening swelling, fatigue, foamy urine, and increasing protein levels suggest that your lupus nephritis may be progressing despite Mycophenolate and Prednisone. You may need an adjustment in treatment, possibly adding or switching to a more aggressive immunosuppressant like Rituximab or Voclosporin. A low-sodium, kidney-friendly diet, and strict blood pressure control (ideally less than 130/80) are crucial. You should see your nephrologist soon to reassess your treatment plan.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
