How to manage HMPV with COPD ?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My father has severe COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), and he was recently diagnosed with HMPV (Human metapneumovirus). The doctors mentioned it but did not explain much, and I am concerned because his breathing is already compromised. Is this virus more dangerous for someone with his condition? How long does it usually take to recover from HMPV, and should I expect any specific complications, like pneumonia or worsening COPD symptoms? Also, is there anything I can do at home to help support his recovery and keep him comfortable?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Yes, HMPV (Human metapneumovirus) can become more dangerous for someone with severe COPD, as it can exacerbate underlying respiratory conditions. HMPV increases inflammation and causes bronchospasm which can worsen COPD. It also decreases lung function.

People with COPD are already at higher risk of developing complications like pneumonia, acute respiratory failure, or secondary bacterial infections and HMPV worsens COPD thus increasing the risk of developing these complications. Most healthy individuals recover from HMPV within one to three weeks, but for someone with a lung condition such as COPD, recovery may take longer (up to four to six weeks). Persistent symptoms like cough, fatigue, or shortness of breath can last longer due to post-viral airway irritation.

At home, you can ensure that he is taking his COPD medicines regularly.

  1. Keep him hydrated.

  2. Use a humidifier.

  3. Tell him to sit upright or in a semi-reclined position. It helps in lung expansion.

  4. Check his nebulizer is working you have plenty of the medicines used in the nebulizer.

  5. Keep an oxygen cylinder in case of an emergency.

  6. Monitor his oxygen level using a pulse oximeter. Keep O2 (Oxygen level more than 90 to 92 percent).

  7. Give him soft, protein-rich, easy-to-digest food.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
