Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a new mom with 2-week-old twins at home and just tested positive for HMPV. My throat is on fire, and I cannot stop coughing. I am worried about my babies. Can they catch it? Should I stop breastfeeding? My mother-in-law is offering to help, but she is 70 years old. I am so worried I will spread the infection to everyone. Do I need to wear a mask at home? How long have I been contagious? My husband works at a nursing home, and we are not sure if he should go to work.
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Usually, the infection is not serious and most will go away in a few days to two weeks.
HMPV (human metapneumovirus) is found in the excretion five days to two weeks after the onset of symptoms. However, the extent of contagiousness is unknown. Transmission of HMPV is most likely to occur by direct or close contact with the respiratory secretions of infected persons or by contact with objects and surfaces contaminated by their secretions.
There are no specific antiviral drugs to treat it. Only medical care is supportive which means over-the-counter cough suppressants, decongestants, and pain relievers.
You will not spread the virus through breast milk, but you will provide your babies with protective antibodies. Continue breastfeeding but take proper hygiene precautions like hand washing.
The probable causes: HMPV and breastfeeding.
Treatment plan: Cough suppressants, decongestants, and pain relief.
Preventive measures: Hygiene precautions such as hand washing.
I hope this helps.
Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.
Thank you.
