What could cause heavy breathing in a 7-year-old?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My seven-year-old son breathes heavily. He does not have any other symptoms, except sneezing occasionally. He has had allergies previously. Is there anything to worry about? Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for writing and I understand your concern.

Heavy breathing can be due to a number of reasons, like overexercise, obesity, lung infection, or allergy. You have already mentioned some allergies. Along with all these, any causes related to the heart also need to be ruled out.

The information provided here is very limited. In his case, the very first thing is a good, detailed history, and then to look for other signs. Lastly comes investigation if needed.

I suggest you share a detailed history, including his weight or height, since when he is having this problem; when it is more, does he sleeps well, any swelling over his face or feet, does he gets repeated throat infections,

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you want more help.

Thank you.
