Is HIV testing after 84 days of exposure accurate?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My plan is to take an HIV test tomorrow after an exposure that happened 84 days ago. I have two questions:

  1. Is 84 days enough to take the test? My doctor told me that I must take the test after 90 days since there may be a risk of HIV 2. So is 84 days enough for both HIV 1 and HIV2?
  2. I have been taking an Amoxicillin antibiotic for five days and will take it for the next five days because of an infection. Will antibiotics affect my HIV test result?

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

It would be better if you go for an HIV antibody test after 90 days of exposure rather than after 84 days to obtain conclusive results, so that you can be relieved of anxiety totally. As per protocol, better go after 90 days and be relieved of HIV worries totally. It includes both HIV 1 and 2 antibodies.

Antibiotics like amoxicillin are unlikely to affect HIV antibody test results. Please go for an HIV antibody test after 90 days of exposure in a reliable laboratory to obtain conclusive results.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I am taking the fourth-generation test. Is the time frame the same 90 days? The problem is that I will be traveling. So, can I take it at 87 days or is it better to take the test after I return back so that it will be post-90 days of exposure? Kindly help.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Glad to have you back.

It would be better if you take the test any time after 90 days of exposure. There is no urgency to take the test within 84 or 87 days. Just finish your travel and please go for HIV antibody tests any time after 90 days. It will help you to be relieved of anxiety totally and you can obtain conclusive results.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
