Can Ibuprofen syrup be given for fever in a 8-year-old?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My son is almost 8 years old. He is having a fever. The last temperature was 99.3 degrees. The doctor has prescribed Meftal 250 DT tablet. Can I give him Ibugesic plus syrup 5 ml now for his fever given that it is not four hours yet of having given him Meftal?

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

As per the limited information provided, it is only fever and nothing else. For fever, thepreferred medicine is Paracetamol. A temperature of 99.3 does not require any medicine. Wait and watch. If it touches 100, then only to give any medicine. I suggest you the following:

  1. Take a syrup of Paracetamol when there is a fever, You can repeat it every four hours if needed.
  2. Take a syrup of Meftal P (Mefenamic acid) if the fever does not subside after one hour of Paracetamol or recur before four hours of giving Paracetamol. You can repeat it every eight hours if needed.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.
