Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am suffering from hepatitis C and chronic liver disease. Recently, I have started experiencing frequent dizzy spells, sometimes so severe that I am unable to even lift my phone to my face. Should I be concerned about this? Please help.
Thank you in advance.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I am sorry about your health condition, but I am glad you are observing your symptoms carefully.
The dizziness you describe is definitely a concern in someone with hepatitis C (a viral infection that mainly affects the liver, causing inflammation and sometimes leading to long-term liver damage if untreated) and chronic liver disease (a lasting liver problem that does not heal quickly and can get worse over time).
Possible causes:
Hepatic encephalopathy: When toxins build up in the blood and affect brain function, causing dizziness, confusion, or drowsiness.
Internal bleeding from varices: Liver disease can cause swollen veins in the stomach or food pipe, which may bleed and result in faintness or dizziness.
Anemia: Very common in liver disease, leading to weakness and lightheadedness.
Electrolyte imbalance: Medications like diuretics (Spironolactone, Furosemide) can disturb sodium or potassium levels and cause dizziness.
Seek urgent care if you have:
Confusion or trouble speaking.
Black stools or vomiting blood.
Severe weakness, fainting, or collapse.
Worsening yellowing of eyes or skin.
Rapid swelling of the belly or legs.
My advice:
Please do not ignore this symptom. With your history, severe dizziness must be checked immediately.
Continue your prescribed medicines unless told otherwise.
Visit a nearby hospital or consult your liver specialist (hepatologist) urgently.
I hope this helps.
Kindly revert so I can assist you further.
Thank you.
