What should I do if my fingers are exposed to blood?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I just had an inquiry. I was exposed to blood on my finger (which has no cuts or wounds), but I would like to know if I have to worry about catching viruses, bacteria, or diseases. I have undergone laboratory tests twice. The first one was for everything, and it came back clear. The second one was specifically for urine, and it also came back clear.

Kindly help.

Hello,

I am glad you chose icliniq for your medical-related queries.

I can understand your concern.

There are various bloodborne diseases like hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), and HIV that are likely to transmit upon contact. The chances of infection transmission with intact skin are unlikely as there is a barrier for viruses or bacteria to enter the body.

Here are the steps to follow after coming in contact with blood or any body fluids:

  1. Wash the exposed area with soap and water immediately.
  2. Flush or splash water if the eyes, nose, or mouth come in contact.
  3. If there is any wound present, kindly consult a physician.
  4. If there is contact with blood, we need to collect a blood sample from the person and run tests for HBV, HCV, and HIV (human immunodeficiency virus).
  5. In your case, as the blood contact is on intact skin, nothing needs to be done, and the risk of infection is negligible. If there is contact with blood in areas with cuts or abrasions, there is an urgent need to connect with your physician.

Hope I have clarified your query. I will be happy to help you further.

Thank you.
