Does brown discharge suggest pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My friend had dark brown-colored blood discharge during her period. Why does it happen like this? Is there any chance of pregnancy? We did not have sexual intercourse last month. She is not taking any tablets.

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query.

Pregnancy is highly unlikely in the scenario you described. Still, if you want peace of mind, you can ask her to get one urine pregnancy test done with a morning urine sample. She can get a pregnancy kit at any medical store. A negative result will rule out pregnancy.

Hope this helps.

Thanks and regards.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thanks for your reply.

Her periods came for two days, then stopped for two days, and then again came for one day. Blood came normally as she used to have earlier. With this period, can we rule out the chance of pregnancy?

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The normal flow of blood and a negative pregnancy test rule out pregnancy. You can stop worrying about it. A pregnancy test with a morning urine sample is better than a random sample with a low chance of false negatives.

I hope this helps.

Thanks and regards.
