Are irregular menstrual cycle, brown vaginal discharge, and bleeding after sex signs of pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I recently had nonpenetrative sex with my partner using a condom, but after removing the condom he ejaculated a little near my genitals and outside my vagina. I took an emegency pill within 48 hours but got a brown discharge followed by bleeding. The bleeding decreased eventually and became scanty. I have not gotten my period yet. My periods are sometimes irregular and I am confused about whether it is withdrawal bleeding or period. Is there any chance of pregnancy? I took the beta hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) test one week after the period date, 17 days after intercourse.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

First of all please do not worry about pregnancy, your beta hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) is negative.

1. Beta hCG usually comes positive after 14 days of conception so if it is less than five on 17th day of intercourse then it is highly likely that you have likely conceived.

2. Emergency pill if taken within 72 hours has a very low failure rate.

3. Sex was nonpenetrative, and ejaculation was at the vulva and not inside the vagina, after which you took the emergency pill, so you do not need to worry about pregnancy.

4. Just wait a week for your periods; if you do not get them even after that, do a urine pregnancy test.

Hope this helps.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you doctor for your reply.

I took another beta serum hCG test 24 days after intercourse and two weeks after the period date. The beta hCG value is 2.15 mUI/ml and the urine test is also negative. Can pregnancy be completely ruled out now?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and can understand your concer.

Beta hCG usually comes positive after 10 to 14 days of conception. This is the most accurate blood test with a sensitivity of 99 % . Since it is negative, the pregnancy can be ruled out if there was no sexual contact after that.

Hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.
