Can boils be the reasons for herpes or STDs?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 35-year-old male. Recently I had a boil in my pubic region. It erupted with pus, and after that it was ok, this boil was big with a lump. The lump was about at least 1 cm and was painful.

Yesterday I noticed a similar boil in my inner thigh. I have attached the picture. There is a big lump for this boil. It is at least 1.5 cm long. I can observe a couple of small boils without pain in my scrotum.

Yesterday evening I had light itching in my eyelid, and from this morning, I have been having pain as well as swelling of my eyelids. I am concerned whether this could be herpes or some other STD. I had a protected encounter with a sex worker about 5 months back and there was no condom breakage or anything of that sort. I do have psoriasis in the genital area. I washed thoroughly after the encounter with soap.

Kindly let me know whether this could be some STD. If so, let me know what tests I should take for confirmation.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Since how long are you having these boils? Are they coming at once the first time, or this is the second episode? Have they all appeared at once or in a pattern, one after another?

Consult a doctor and get it physically examined. Make sure you maintain strict hygiene conditions. No finger poking etc. Wash the area thoroughly with soap and water in hairy areas, like the scrotum, and penis, and keep the area clean. Use only sterile equipment, and avoid any kind of sexual act for the time being.

Get investigated at the earliest to rule out the medical or surgical causes, or any doubt about STD (sexually transmitted disease), by taking a VDRL (venereal disease research laboratory) test.

Avoid any over-the-counter medications, ointment, or creams to further worsen the condition.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

I have been seeing these boils for three weeks. They seem to be appearing one by one. This is the first time I have observed them. Are you suspecting syphilis, since you have suggested a VDRL test? Are all other STDs ruled out?

Is it possible that this could be a common boil related to sweating and summer heat? How to rule out that this is not common boils?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Since you are giving a recent history of sexual contact, it Is best to rule it out by investigating, including all other routine tests as well, to rule out any medical or surgical cause

Meanwhile, get it physically examined as well, take plenty of water, wear only cotton clothes,

change underclothes twice depending on sweat or weather, and maintain strict hygiene conditions.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
