Is my pain and itching due to a popped Bartholin cyst?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had a Bartholin cyst that popped, and now I am experiencing itchiness, redness, pain, and tenderness in my private area with small red bumps on it.

I had sex about two nights ago. That same night, I went straight to sleep afterward. When I woke up the next morning, a felt a lump in my throat, and my vaginal area was itchy and painful. I kept touching and scratching it, but it hurt to scratch. That is when I felt a bump that was unusually large in my vaginal area. I also felt a large bump in the area, so I noticed one of my Bartholin glands was significantly swollen compared to the others.

The next day, I suspected it might be a Bartholin cyst. So I tried to treat it. I tried to manage it by going outside to mow the grass. I wore a thong and super-tight shorts because I had read on the internet that applying pressure helps reduce swelling. After mowing for about an hour and a half, the cyst appeared smaller. Like it had popped. But there were no signs of pus discharge.

I then took a bath and Ibuprofen, which helped relieve pain and itching. I also applied a heating pad directly onto the area, which did not seem to have much effect. I have had a Bartholin cyst before, but that was not because of skin contact with metal, an allergic reaction. That one went away within a few minutes. Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

I am glad you are paying attention to changes in your body. But do not worry I am here to take care of you. Regarding your symptoms and the pictures you have sent (attachment removed to protect the patient’s identity), I strongly believe you have developed a Bartholin abscess that was poorly healed. From the view of the cyst, the cyst itself seems to have resolved and has left a wound.

So please take the following;

  1. Capsules Co-Amoxiclav 625 mg orally twice daily for two weeks.

  2. Tablets Metronidazole 400 mg orally three times a day for two weeks.

Consult your doctor and take the medicines accordingly.

If your symptoms persist, please schedule a follow-up appointment via chat, phone, or video consultation.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
