This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had extreme anxiety attack 15 years back and I lost hope in life, and I almost committed suicide. Since then, I have always had negative thoughts and negative imaginations. I never took medications except doing physical exercises which helped me overcome anxiety but the negative and uncontrolled imagination remains an issue. Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I am here to help you get the best medical advice.

I am really sorry to hear that you have been struggling with negative thoughts and uncontrolled imagination since your anxiety attack 15 years back. I suggest you do the following which may be helpful:

  1. Seek therapy: Consider finding a therapist or counselor who specializes in anxiety and trauma. They can provide you with coping strategies, tools, and support to manage your negative thoughts and imagination.
  2. Speak to a psychiatrist: Consulting a psychiatrist can help determine if medication might be beneficial for you. They can assess your situation and prescribe medications, if necessary, to help regulate your thoughts and emotions.
  3. Practice mindfulness and meditation: Engaging in mindfulness and meditation exercises can help you develop awareness and control over your thoughts. There are many resources available, including apps and online guides, that can guide you through these practices.
  4. Establish a support system: Surround yourself with supportive friends and family members who can provide emotional support and encouragement. Consider joining support groups where you can connect with others who have experienced similar challenges.
  5. Engage in self-care activities: Take care of yourself by engaging in activities that bring you joy and relaxation. This could include hobbies, exercise, spending time in nature, practicing self-compassion, and getting enough rest.

There are various types of medications that may be prescribed to help manage anxiety. These can include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), benzodiazepines, and beta blockers, among others.

There are various lifestyle changes that can help manage anxiety which are as follows:

  1. Regular exercise: Physical activity releases endorphins, which can improve mood and reduce anxiety.
  2. Healthy diet: Eating a balanced diet containing plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins can support overall well-being and can help reduce anxiety symptoms.
  3. Adequate sleep: Getting enough sleep is crucial for managing stress and anxiety. Aim for seven to nine hours of quality sleep each night.
  4. Stress management techniques: Practice relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, yoga, or mindfulness to help calm the mind and reduce anxiety.
  5. Limit caffeine and alcohol intake: Both caffeine and alcohol can worsen anxiety symptoms, so it is best not to consume them.

Remember, it is important to reach out for professional help when dealing with ongoing mental health issues. You do not have to face this alone, as there are people trained to assist you.

I hope this helps. Do get back if you have any further queries.

Thank you.
