How to manage an autistic child?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My son is nearing his 20s and suffering from autism from birth. His hearing got impaired, and he has a cochlear implant. Autism was detected later. He does all his daily chores by himself. No other physical disability is present. However, he repeats sentences 40 to 50 times, and we have to repeat them with him. He does not mingle with others, and his sleep cycle is improper. He takes tablet Sizodon (Risperidone) 2 mg daily. Off late, his anxiety is increasing. Every day he picks up a target like going to a shop or any place and keeps repeating until we take him there. We are under tremendous stress due to his continuous rattling and anxiety. He likes to go out and eat junk food. Now he is very obsessive about them. He takes names of old friends, places he visited, or any acquaintances most of the time.

Please advise me on ways to calm him.

Thank you, doctor.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

He has been diagnosed with autism and is given tablet Risperidone to control his behavioral issues. However, if his anxiety persists, I think he should be given some drugs to control anxiety.

I suggest you take (consult with a specialist doctor, talk with him or her and take the medicines with their concern) tablet Clonidine to control autistic behavior and anxiety and tablet Etizolam or tablet Clonazepam to calm him. Sometimes tablet RIsperidone can worsen anxiety. This can be minimized by taking tablet Etizolam or tablet Clonazepam.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks for your response.

May I know if these medicines can make a good impact on my child?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Yes, taking (consult with a specialist doctor, talk with him or her and take the medicines with their consent) tablet Clonidine can help him relax, and his anxiety will be under control.

Thank you.
