Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I need guidance on surgical weight loss. I am 49, 5'6", and currently weigh 327 pounds, with a medical history that is becoming a nightmare. I am diabetic and require insulin, have hypertension, sleep apnea, and early-stage kidney damage. Traditional diets have been a rollercoaster – I have lost and regained hundreds of pounds over the decades. My mobility is severely limited, and I am terrified of becoming completely dependent on others. My sister had a gastric bypass five years ago and completely reversed her diabetes. My current medical team suggests metabolic surgery might be my last lifeline. Would I be a good candidate given my complex health history? What risks should I consider? I have three teenage children and want to be present for their lives.
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Bariatric surgery is the perfect decision for you as it reverses your obesity, Diabetes, and sleep apnea which are all present in you. Yes, there are some complications during surgery like bleeding, infection, and blood clots. Late complications are dumping syndrome, bowel obstruction, hernia, gallstones, malnutrition, etc. Your present condition is perfect for this surgery I think. Even with complex health issues. Because you have no contraindications to it. But the thing is that even after the surgery you have to maintain a diet, exercise, and live a healthy lifestyle. Reducing weight helps to take less medication. According to me, the benefits are more than the risks in this case. But please do it under a bariatric surgeon following his rules. Hope you will lead a happy, satisfied, and fulfilling life if you maintain it. May you live peacefully with all your children.
I hope this helps.
Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.
Thank you.
