Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have been on a weight loss diet for a year now, and my weight has decreased way more than expected. Should I continue the medication? I am worried about gaining it all back if I quit.
Will my weight shoot back up overnight once I stop? How do I transition off the drug safely? I am also concerned about side effects from long-term use. Is it safe to keep taking it?
What is the recommended duration? I do not want to become dependent on it. Also, how can I maintain my weight loss without the medicines?
Please help.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
When it comes to using weight loss medications chronically and the possible dangers of discontinuation, let me emphasize again that while these drugs could indeed help attain your weight reduction goals, they are not usually indicated for long-term use. The decision to continue or stop the medication must be based on a comprehensive evaluation of your current medical condition, weight stability, and any side effects you may be experiencing.
Gradual medication withdrawal is advised, rather than abrupt withdrawal, to minimize the risk of rapid regain of weight. This withdrawal must be made with close supervision in the clinic, under rigorous reinforcement of lifestyle modifications with an emphasis on a healthy diet, regular exercise, and behavior modification helpful to sustain weight loss. Moreover, pre-existing medical conditions or factors that led to weight gain must be treated if the results are to be long-term.
The safety profile that comes with long-term use is based on the specific drug that is prescribed. Some of the pharmacological agents used in making a patient lose weight are reported to have some adverse effects when used for a long time; hence, regular assessments should be done to identify any complications resulting from use. The duration recommended will be based on the response of the individual to the drug and their general health condition.
The ultimate goal is a change to a healthy lifestyle that would allow continuation of their weight loss but without medication. This could be anything from consulting with a dietician and exercising regularly to incorporating good daily habits to ensure long-term success.
If you have concerns about dependence or other side effects, I again want you to bring those issues forward to construct a plan that meets your health goals and ensures your safety.
I hope this information will help you.
Thank you.
