Can glaucoma cause vision loss and appearance of floaters?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been losing vision in my right eye with floaters. I visited an eye doctor who said she saw asymmetry in my optic nerves. She said this is almost always caused by glaucoma. Please help.

Thank you.

Hello

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. Does any of your parents have glaucoma? First of all, you need to stop stressing about this. Glaucoma is a very tricky disease to diagnose and is mainly prominent in the older population. Glaucoma in the younger generation is usually congenital and the symptoms by your age are very evident. Higher levels of myopia in one eye can also cause floaters. I would like to see the results of the refraction, OCT (optical coherence tomography), visual field test, and tonometry to confirm that.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.

Regards.
