Can precum cause pregnancy despite taking ECP?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

During our intimate activity, I touched my precum semen with my fingers and then I put it in my girlfriend’s vagina. Will she get pregnant? This happened yesterday. Should she take contraceptive pills and use the Yuzpe method? I only have pills containing Ethinylestradiol and Levonorgestrel.

My girlfriend's period usually starts at the end of the month and ends in the early days of the new month. Was she in her luteal phase at that time? Can she still get pregnant during the luteal phase? I need more information about this, and we are really scared.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

From what you have described, the situation you are worried about carries an extremely low to almost no risk of pregnancy.

Pregnancy requires live sperm to enter the vagina in sufficient numbers, and in your case, the exposure was only through a very small amount of pre-ejaculate on your fingertip that may have rubbed off on clothing first before you fingered your partner.

Sperm are very fragile once outside the body. They dry out and lose their ability to swim very quickly, especially after being wiped, rubbed, or exposed to air and fabric. Because of that, it is highly unlikely that any viable sperm could have been transferred in this way.

Regarding timing, if your girlfriend’s last period was at the end of last month, then yesterday would indeed fall in her luteal phase, which is the second half of the menstrual cycle after ovulation and before her next period.

During this phase, the chances of pregnancy are naturally very low, since the egg is no longer viable.

Given both the nature of the contact and the timing, there is no need for her to take emergency contraception such as the Yuzpe method (a type of emergency contraception that includes taking two high-doses combination of estrogen and progestin pills within 72 hours of unprotected sex) or Trust pills (Ethinylestradiol and Levonorgestrel), as the situation does not pose a realistic pregnancy risk.

To reduce anxiety in the future, it is best to use protection like condoms even with sexual play, and to be mindful that true pregnancy risk occurs mainly with direct penetration and ejaculation inside the vagina.

I hope that this answers your query.

Kindly follow up if you have more doubts.

Thank you.
