How to manage type 1 diabetes during sports?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 20 years old and was recently diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. I worry about how this will impact my daily life, especially at college and with friends. How do I manage my blood sugar during sports, and what should I do if I have a low while I am out with friends? Also, how can I explain this to my friends without feeling embarrassed or different?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Before starting any physical activity, it is important to check your blood sugar levels. If your blood sugar is on the lower side, have a small carbohydrate snack and keep yourself hydrated.

After you have finished your activity, check your blood sugar again. Make sure to carry quick sources of sugar, like glucose in case you feel your blood sugar dropping during sports. Common signs of low blood sugar include-

  1. Shaking.

  2. Sweating.

  3. Dizziness.

  4. Confusion.

  5. Irritability.

  6. Weakness.

If you drink alcohol, be aware that it can lower your blood sugar, especially if consumed on an empty stomach. It is important to eat while drinking and monitor your blood sugar more frequently during and after drinking.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
