How safe and effective is compounded Semaglutide?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was prescribed compounded Semaglutide for weight loss, but I am having severe stomach side effects, and my blood sugar is dropping too quickly. Could this be because it is not the same as the branded version? How can I be sure the compounding pharmacy made it correctly? I have also heard there have been reports of contamination or incorrect dosing with compounded GLP-1 medications. Is that true? I read that some pharmacies use different salt forms. Does that affect the safety or effectiveness of the drug?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Compounded Semaglutide has not gone through the same approval and testing process as FDA- (Food and Drug Administration) approved medications, so its safety and effectiveness are not guaranteed. It is very important to get Semaglutide through a valid prescription and only from a state-licensed pharmacy or an FDA-registered facility. Some reported side effects of compounded Semaglutide include belching, bloating or a full feeling, constipation, excess gas in the stomach or intestines, gas-related stomach pain, passing gas, stomach discomfort, fullness or pain, vomiting, and a rapid drop in blood sugar levels.

Compounded Semaglutide may also lead to other side effects or complications, especially if the ingredients or equipment used to make the medication are not of good quality. Without FDA regulation, the compounded version may contain incorrect amounts of the active ingredient or harmful impurities. This lack of precision can lead to serious health issues, ranging from mild discomfort to major complications. The probable cause and diagnosis in this case is being overweight. The suggested treatment is to use the brand-name version of Semaglutide under medical supervision.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
