How to manage the symptoms scrub typhus?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 40-year-old woman living in a rural area in Asia. About two weeks ago, I developed a high fever, headache, body aches, and a rash on my leg. I noticed a dark scab on my lower abdomen that appeared around the same time. My symptoms have persisted, and I now feel weak and fatigued. A neighbor mentioned that it could be scrub typhus due to the risk of mite bites in our area. Could this be the cause of my symptoms? What diagnostic tests, like an ELISA or PCR test, would confirm the diagnosis? Additionally, what treatments would you recommend to manage this condition? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

There are tests available for scrub typhus (it is a bacterial disease caused by the bite of an infected mite) which include PCR (polymerase chain reaction) or IgM ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) for scrub typhus. I would recommend you to do a test once, if you are not able to do a blood test then you can also go for a rapid diagnostic test for scrub typhus, it is easy and convenient and the results will be there in 10 minutes.

Once you get to know it is scrub typhus then I would suggest taking Doxycycline 100 mg for five days and everything will be fine.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
