What causes rosacea and swelling on cheeks and face?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have rosacea and swelling on my cheeks and face since 19 days ago. I have given Doxycycline but stopped it after four days due to a headache. My swelling improved substantially. Will this be permanent?

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

The differential diagnosis is seborrheic dermatitis. I suggest you do the following:

  1. Apply Miconazole cream in the daytime for four weeks. Apply 1 percent of Metronidazole gel at night for two weeks.
  2. Avoid activities that cause sweating.
  3. Avoid heat as it favors fungal growth.
  4. Use Cetrimide soap for baths for 15 days.
  5. Use Ketoscalp (Ketoconazole) shampoo twice weekly for two weeks.
  6. Avoid harsh soaps. Use mild soaps for baths for one month.
  7. Do not scratch or rub the lesions.
  8. Eat healthy and nutritious food.
  9. Avoid hot beverages or spicy food.
  10. Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun.
  11. Use sun-protection measures.
  12. Use good sunscreen.
  13. Avoid known triggers.
  14. Avoid the use of harsh topicals like retinoids and high potent steroids.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.
