Can antibiotics and antiseptic gargles treat upper respiratory tract infections?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been suffering from a severe cough and throat pain for the last four months. The pain has been occurring in the last few days. Previously, I took tablet Azithromycin for six days, which provided some relief, but the symptoms recurred. Subsequently, the doctor prescribed the tablet Montelukast for one month, and after taking it, I experienced some relief. However, I did not complete the full course as I had to travel. After returning, I developed typhoid, which has since been cured, but I still have a cough, sore throat, and throat pain. The doctor has now prescribed a combination of Amoxicillin and Clavulanate potassium along with Montelukast for one week. I have taken them for a week but have not seen any improvement. All my X-rays and blood tests have come back normal. Could you please suggest what I should do next?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. Recurrent upper respiratory tract infections suggest that we should look into factors that may have been overlooked. Are you diabetic? Do you consume alcohol or use tobacco? Any other habits to consider? Not maintaining good oral hygiene can also contribute to recurrent issues. I suggest continuing with a combination of Amoxicillin and Clavulanate potassium, as well as Aceclofenac 100mg three times a day for another week. Additionally, you should perform Povidone-iodine gargles five to six times a day and stay away from tobacco, and betel nuts.

Thank you.
