Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I am worried about my mom's psoriasis. She is 54 years old and has been dealing with these weird red patches on her skin for months now, and they look so painful. She says they start as small spots and then spread like crazy. Our family has a history of autoimmune disease, so I am wondering if this could be genetic. Her dermatologist recommended some cream, but it does not seem to help much. She has got these thick silvery scales that crack and bleed sometimes, and it affects her joints too. She cannot even open jars or walk without limping. Her skin looks so inflamed, and she is getting really self-conscious about wearing short sleeves. Do you think this might be more than just a skin problem? Could this be related to our family's autoimmune history?
Thanks.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
Psoriasis is indeed genetic, often running in families with a history of autoimmune conditions. The red patches, silvery scales, and joint pain (psoriatic arthritis) suggest that her psoriasis may be affecting her joints as well, which is not uncommon. The bleeding and cracking indicate that her psoriasis is active and may need more aggressive treatment. Since the topical creams are not working, we need to consider systemic medications like DMARDs (disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs) and biologics to address both the skin and joint issues. It will take time to heal, so manage and support her through this. With consistent care and proper medicines, it can be managed.
I hope this information will help you.
Thanks.
