How to treat stage 2 prostate cancer in a 65-year-old?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My husband, who is 65 years old, just got diagnosed with stage 2 prostate cancer. His PSA is 12.3, and the Gleason score is 7. As a construction worker, he is worried about treatment side effects affecting his work. He has been experiencing increased fatigue and weight loss. I need to understand treatment options and their success rates. The financial aspect is also concerning as our insurance coverage is limited.

Thanks.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Sorry to hear about your husband’s condition. Understandably, a diagnosis of cancer may cause panic within the family. However, prostate cancer is not like other cancers. It spreads slowly, and we have terrific treatment options available for our patients.

For me to give you an opinion, I would require the following:

  1. A detailed history of his symptoms (if any) and how the cancer was diagnosed.

  2. Detailed results from his biopsy and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) or PET (positron emission tomography) scans.

  3. Information about his fitness levels.

  4. Treatment options depend on the patient’s disease status, symptoms, and fitness.

Whilst all treatment options do affect the quality of life in the immediate post-treatment phase. The symptoms generally resolve within a month or so. Please revert back with the details, and I will do my best to assist you.

I hope this information will help you.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
