How accurate are MRI and biopsy in detecting prostate cancer?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My diagnosis of intermediate-risk prostate cancer came after a multiparametric MRI and a biopsy. My urologist mentioned these tests are highly accurate. I am 72. Should I trust the results, or would additional testing, like a PET scan, provide more information? What is the next step after diagnosis?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

PSMA PET (prostate-specific membrane antigen positron emission tomography) is a diagnostic tool used to detect prostate cancer anywhere in the body. It detects cellular changes in organs and tissues earlier than MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). But once your case is already diagnosed and confirmed by both biopsy and MRI, there is no need to waste your time on PET, as it will not add anything to the diagnosis of your condition.

The next step will be starting treatment in the form of

  1. Radiotherapy and androgen deprivation therapy are given during and after treatment for 18 to 24 months (androgen is the fuel of the growth of prostate cancer).
  2. Radical prostatectomy with pelvic lymphadenectomy.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.

Best wishes
