Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have been thinking about something lately. Prostate cancer runs in my family. My relatives have all dealt with it in one way or another. Now, I am 53, have type 2 diabetes to boot, and I am trying to do whatever I can to stay healthy.
I have heard a bit about how changing up your diet, maybe going more plant-based, could help prevent prostate cancer. Is there any truth to that? I mean, could something as simple as what I eat make a difference?
I am not getting any younger, and the last thing I need is another health issue to worry about.
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Dietary changes can play a significant role in reducing the risk of prostate cancer, especially with a family history of the disease or risk factors such as diabetes (high blood sugar).
A plant-based diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes may help lower the risk of prostate cancer.
Foods like tomatoes are high in lycopene.
Vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower have been associated with a lower risk of prostate cancer.
Foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids also offer protective benefits.
Limiting the consumption of red meats, high-fat dairy products, and foods high in saturated fats and sugars have been linked to an increased risk of prostate cancer.
Regular physical activity, maintaining a healthy weight, and tobacco are important for reducing the risk of prostate cancer.
A physical examination by a specialist doctor is a must.
I hope this helps.
