What causes headaches and frequent urination?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi, Doctor,

My head has been hurting for a few days. I have peed more than 15 times since yesterday, and it was clear. This morning I peed, and it was a little yellowish. Why so?

Please help me.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com

Possible causes:

  1. Overhydration (drinking too much water): Can lead to frequent urination with clear urine. May cause headaches, fatigue, or even electrolyte imbalance.

  2. High blood sugar or early diabetes: Excess glucose pulls water into urine and causes frequent peeing, thirst, and possible headache from dehydration.

  3. Urinary tract irritation or infection: Less likely since urine is clearer, and you did not mention burning or discomfort.

  4. Caffeine or diuretics: Energy drinks, coffee, or some medications can increase urination and contribute to headaches.

  5. Mild dehydration (despite frequent urination): If the body is flushing fluids but not retaining electrolytes properly, you can still feel unwell.

What you should do now:

  1. Hydrate moderately with electrolyte fluids (like oral rehydration solutions, coconut water, or electrolyte powder in water).

  2. Avoid excessive plain water. Too much can dilute your sodium and worsen symptoms.

  3. Rest in a cool, quiet place.

  4. Track your urine (color, frequency, and discomfort).

Seek medical help if you observe the following symptoms.

  1. Dark yellow, orange, or brown urine.

  2. Pain or burning while urinating.

  3. Ongoing or worsening headache.

  4. Dizziness, confusion, or vision changes.

  5. Nausea or vomiting.

  6. Feeling very weak or faint.

Also, could you share your height, weight, and any medications or supplements you are currently using? That will help personalize recommendations further.

I hope this information helps you.

Thank you.
