Is frequent urination an indication of a urinary tract infection?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I started experiencing symptoms such as frequent urination, a feeling of fullness in my bladder even after urinating, a tingling sensation in my urethra, and mild abdominal aches. I started getting this a few days after having unprotected sex with an ex-girlfriend who claimed she had no STIs. I was tested for gonorrhea and chlamydia 14 days after exposure, and the tests were negative. I have yet to experience any discharge.

I took the tablet Azithromycin, 1 gram, and my symptoms improved briefly before worsening again. However, this problem has been going on for three months, and I am starting to worry that something is wrong. I would appreciate it if anyone could help me figure this out.

In addition, the tingling sensations in my urethra and meatus appear to be better in the morning and worse at night.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Urgency and burning urethra are common symptoms of urinary tract infection (UTI). Therefore, I recommend you perform urinalysis, culture, and sensitivity, showing us the organism and the most effective antibiotics. Sometimes, atypical bacteria cause these symptoms for months.

Please send me the urinalysis report if you have already done it. We must also rule out Trichomonas, a commonly overlooked sexually transmitted disease (STD).

Do you have any discharge or rashes on your skin?

I hope this helps.

Please revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
