Are nausea and hunger pangs common in pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello,

I missed my periods after which I got a positive pregnancy test. I got an ultrasound but they said there is nothing. I took another pregnancy test and yet again, it was positive. It has been a few days that I have been feeling unwell. Every time I get hungry and want to eat, I feel full and burp. It feels heavy and nauseating. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I read your query, congratulations on your pregnancy. It is normal to feel unwell during the early stages of pregnancy, and symptoms such as feeling full, burping, and nausea can be common. These are caused by hormonal changes in your body and can vary in severity and duration from person to person. However, given that you have had a positive pregnancy test and have missed your period, it is important to follow up with a healthcare professional to better understand your situation, especially if your ultrasound did not detect anything. Ultrasound should be done after seven weeks to check the cardiac activity of the heart. In the meantime, here are some tips that may help with your symptoms:

Tips

1. Eat small, frequent meals throughout the day to avoid feeling too full or bloated.

2. Avoid foods that trigger nausea or make you feel unwell.

3. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water or other fluids like ginger ale or herbal tea.

4. Discuss with your healthcare professional about the use of nausea-reducing medications if necessary. I hope this helps.

Thank you.
