How should a patient with type 1 diabetes gain weight?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have had type 1 diabetes for the past five years. I have not gained any weight since. Please suggest to me something to help me gain weight.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. I am assuming you have already started taking Insulin shots, and in type 1 diabetes, the cells are completely starved of sugar, and all of the sugar is excreted in the urine. As a result, patients have difficulty gaining weight. I can provide you with some guidelines that will assist you in gaining weight. First, eat three meals per day. Never skip a meal, and eat them at regular intervals. More starchy complex carbohydrates, such as wheat, bread, pasta, and noodles, should be consumed at each meal. These keep your blood glucose levels stable, provide enough fiber, and help you maintain your glucose levels.

If you are not a vegetarian, include lean fat meat like chicken, turkey, or even fish in at least one meal per day. When you are hungry between meals, have low-fat butter, skimmed milk, or skimmed curd, which are readily available in the market. Every alternate day, eat fruits such as apples, cucumber, a fruit smoothie, some grapes (not a lot), and a banana. Consume green leafy vegetables, such as spinach, broccoli, and saag. Snacks such as chicken soup or stew are extremely healthy and will satisfy your hunger pangs. Follow these guidelines for a month, and check your weight. Then, alter your insulin dose according to your blood sugar.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
