This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My brother is 24 years old and he was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease through an ultrasound scan. My father has the same problem. I wanted to know about the causes, symptoms, and treatment options for PKD. Could you please make me understand about this condition? Am I also at risk?

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. But do not worry I am here to take care of you. Regarding your questions. Polycystic kidney disease is a genetic disorder characterized by the growth of numerous cysts in the kidneys. These cysts are filled with fluid and can lead to enlarged kidneys and loss of kidney function over time. Polycystic Kidney Disease can cause serious complications, including high blood pressure and kidney failure. It has the following symptoms, an enlarged abdomen due to kidney swelling, high blood pressure, pain in the back or sides, blood in the urine, frequent urinary tract infections, kidney stones, and decline in kidney function leading to kidney failure.

The PKD could be inherited, and I see your father had a kidney disease. Since the diagnosis is confirmed, I will advise the following: lifestyle modifications, symptomatic painkillers, use of antihypertensive and manage any complications that may arise.

I hope this helps.

Let me know if you have any other concerns.

Thank you.
