Is breastfeeding safe with pneumococcal lung infection?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My sister had a baby 4 months ago, and she was diagnosed with pneumococcal disease last week. She is super worried that this could affect the baby since she is breastfeeding. She has not been feeling great, with low energy and chesty coughs, but she is scared to stop feeding her baby.

  1. Is it safe for her to continue?
  2. Also, how contagious is this?
  3. Should the baby get tested?
  4. What can she do to get better and keep the baby safe?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your query and understand your concern.

Ask the sister to take medicines advised by the physician which are safe during lactation and complete the course. Do not stop feeding unless advised by a physician or Gynaecologist

Precautions:

1. Wear a mask: Wear a mask when interacting with others to reduce the transmission risk.

2. Practice good hygiene: Wash your hands with soap and water, and avoid touching your face.

3. Avoid sharing personal items: Refrain from sharing personal items, such as utensils, towels, or drinking glasses.

Lifestyle modifications:

1. Healthy diet: Focus on a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.

2. Regular exercise: Engage in regular exercise, such as yoga (pranayama yoga), swimming, or walking, to improve overall health.

3. Stress management: Practice stress-reducing techniques, such as meditation, deep breathing, or cognitive-behavioral therapy.

4. Sleep hygiene: Establish a consistent sleep schedule, avoid caffeine and electronics before bedtime, and create a relaxing sleep environment

5. Steam inhalation will help

6. Baby to follow the immunization schedule

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
