What role does the FDA play in the approval of vaccines?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I would like to learn about the vaccine options currently available. I have heard a lot about Pfizer but am not entirely sure how it functions or what distinguishes it from other vaccines. What role does the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) play with regard to vaccines? Does FDA approval imply that they are safe?

I am also confused about how Moderna differs from Pfizer. Are they essentially the same, or are there significant differences between the two?

How do these vaccines protect us from diseases? Could someone explain in simple terms the differences between these vaccines and whether one is preferable over the other? I want to ensure that I have accurate information. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thanks for your query.

Both Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna vaccines are mRNA vaccines (a new type of vaccine that uses messenger RNA to instruct cells to produce a protein that triggers an immune response). This technology teaches your cells how to make a protein that triggers an immune response. Unlike traditional vaccines, which use an inactivated form of the virus, mRNA vaccines utilize a small piece of the virus's mRNA to instruct your cells to produce a harmless segment of the spike protein found on the surface of the SARS-CoV-2 virus (the virus that causes COVID-19). Once your cells display this protein on their surfaces, your immune system recognizes it as foreign and begins to produce antibodies.

The Pfizer vaccine was one of the first mRNA vaccines to be authorized and requires two doses given 21 days apart. The Moderna vaccine, also an mRNA vaccine, requires two doses given 28 days apart and has shown slightly higher effectiveness.

When a vaccine is approved by the FDA, it indicates that it has undergone rigorous testing and meets high safety and effectiveness standards.

Both Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are highly effective at preventing COVID-19. Common side effects include a sore arm, fatigue, and mild fever.

There is no clear "better" option between Pfizer and Moderna. Both vaccines are highly effective and safe. The best vaccine for you is the one that will be available to you soon. Discuss your options with your doctor. Get well soon, and do not hesitate to follow up with any further questions.

I hope this guidance helps you.

Please do not hesitate to reach out if you need further assistance.

Thank you.
