Can PCOD cause an abortion six weeks after conceiving?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have been trying to get pregnant for the last four years. I have had six abortions so far. All have the same issue that the baby does not grow after six weeks. Baby's heartbeat either does not come or gets lost after six weeks. I was diagnosed with PCOS. I am able to conceive but pregnancy loss occurs every time. Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

You have been experiencing recurrent pregnancy losses. The most common reason for recurrent pregnancy loss is usually a defective fertilizing sperm and hence your partner's semen analysis report would be required for evaluation to check for abnormal sperms if any. The next cause being inherited or acquired thrombophilias. You would have to undergo a thrombophilia screen to rule out if any in your case. The third cause is genetic cause or possible chromosomal disorder which shall require a couple genetic screening to be done. So avoid planning the next pregnancy before these tests are done. PCOS does not cause pregnancy loss.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for replying to my queries. I am attaching some of the tests done by the doctor during treatments. Please check these and please guide me if something more is required to solve my problem.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The reports (attachments removed for patient’s identity protection) are all normal in your and husband's case. I think the next thing to do is to get thrombophilia screening as that is the most often missed cause in cases of recurrent pregnancy losses.

Thank you for consulting me.
