Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My son is recovering from pneumococcal disease. He was in the hospital for a week with pneumonia and sepsis, and it was terrifying. Now that he is home, he is still coughing and feels tired all the time. I am really worried about how long it will take for him to fully recover and if there are any long-term effects we should be aware of. Should our whole family get vaccinated now? I am paranoid about him getting sick again. I would also like advice on how to prevent future infections and ways to help build up his immune system.
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
Thank you for using this platform.
Since your son recently recovered from pneumococcal pneumonia, it is essential to monitor him closely, especially given his age. Watch for warning signs like a persistent fever that does not respond to medication, new or worsening shortness of breath, and persistent coughing with blood in the sputum. If any of these symptoms occur, contact his doctor immediately.
Recovery from pneumococcal pneumonia typically takes time, with fever resolving first, followed by cough and fatigue. To prevent future pneumonia, ensure your son receives regular vaccinations two to four weeks after his recovery, keep up with pediatrician visits, and maintain a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet. If any family members have increased risk factors, such as diabetes or a history of respiratory issues, they should also get vaccinated.
I hope you got an answer.
Please let me know if you need any further help.
Thank you.
