Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My child's friend was just diagnosed with pneumonia, and I am apprehensive. How easily can it spread? What are the chances my child will catch it too? I would like to know how to prevent pneumonia. Are there specific precautions we should take? What causes it? Do bacteria always cause it, or can viruses cause it too? Is it similar to a normal fever or cold, or is it something more serious? I am very scared. Also, my kids love ice cream smoothies. Is it right for them to keep having cold treats, or should we avoid them now?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I just read your query and understand your concern.
Pneumonia should be taken seriously, particularly in younger age groups. Danger signs to watch for in pneumonia patients include:
1. Persistent fever that does not respond to medication.
2. New onset of shortness of breath.
Pneumonia is common in children and the elderly, as they tend to have weaker immune systems compared to healthy adults. It can be caused by both bacteria and viruses.
It is recommended to consult a pulmonologist immediately if pneumonia is suspected.
For the prevention of pneumonia:
1. Ensure regular vaccinations, ideally two to four weeks after recovery from pneumonia.
2. Have regular follow-ups with a pulmonologist.
3. Maintain an active and healthy lifestyle.
4. Eat a balanced and nutritious diet.
I hope that you got your answer.
Regards.
