Is it bad to exercise while on my periods?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Is working out during menstruation a taboo? I am 18, and my mother does not let me exercise during my menstrual cycle. She says it is not good for me, but I have read mixed opinions online. Is it bad to exercise while on my period? I usually feel better when I stay active, but I do not want to do anything harmful.

Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I understand your concern.

There is this common belief that it is not good for you, but actually, staying active during your period can be beneficial. For one, exercise releases endorphins, those natural pain relievers that can help ease menstrual cramps. Plus, it is a mood booster and can reduce feelings of fatigue and irritability that often come with menstruation. When it comes to exercising safely, it is crucial to listen to your body. If you are experiencing intense pain or discomfort, lighter activities like stretching or yoga might be better options. Hydration is key too- drinking plenty of water helps manage symptoms and supports overall health. Moderate-intensity exercises such as walking, swimming, yoga, or light jogging are generally considered safe and can be adjusted based on how you are feeling each day. There is this myth floating around that exercising during menstruation can lead to health problems, but in reality, unless you have specific medical conditions or severe symptoms, moderate exercise is perfectly safe and can provide relief. I also understand your mom's concerns, are likely influenced by cultural beliefs or personal experiences. I think having an open discussion with her, sharing what you have learned about the benefits of staying active, can help ease her worries. Ultimately, deciding whether to exercise during menstruation should be based on how you feel and what activities you enjoy. It is about finding a balance that works for you and supports your well-being. If there are any specific medical concerns, it is always a good idea to talk to a healthcare provider for personalized advice.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
