Do mood swings after a miscarriage indicate bipolar disorder?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have got some concerns about my sister. She is 28 years old and recently had a miscarriage. Since then, she is been on a rollercoaster of emotions. Sometimes she is down, talking about feeling gloomy and even having suicidal thoughts. But then, out of the blue, she will be super happy and full of energy. I did some reading and came across something called bipolar disorder. It seems like it might explain her extreme mood swings. I am really worried about her and I am not sure what to do. Could you tell me more about bipolar disorder? What are the symptoms she might be experiencing? And most importantly, how can we help her?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query.

I can understand your situation and your sister's problem. Please do not make the internet your doctor. Please take her to the nearest psychiatrist for a detailed evaluation. I do not think that she has bipolar disorder from your above details. She may have postpartum depression. You should tell her to do the following lifestyle to deal with her. It will help her.

1) She should do exercises daily for 30 to 45 minutes like at least going for a walk.

2) She should do meditation for 20 minutes daily, just sit in one place in a comfortable position, and try to concentrate on her normal breathing, do not stop or force herself to stop her thoughts, just let it be.

3) She should eat healthy home-cooked foods, and avoid junk food.

4) She must drink enough water.

5) She should spend quality time with friends and family daily or do video calls if you are living away from your family.

6) She should spend time on creative hobbies like reading good books, writing journals, painting, drawing, and learning new skills or language or musical instruments.

7) She should get enough seven to eight hours of sleep daily.

8) She must avoid tobacco alcohol or any substance abuse.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.
