Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I would appreciate your insight regarding metabolic surgery options.
I am 51 years old, 5 feet 8 inches tall, and currently weigh 328 pounds. Over the past several years, my health has declined significantly. I have developed type 2 diabetes, with my HbA1c consistently remaining above 10 despite being on the maximum allowable medications. I also have hypertension that requires four different drugs to manage, severe obstructive sleep apnea, and was recently hospitalized due to congestive heart failure.
I have attempted nearly every available diet and weight loss program, including prescription medications and hospital-supervised interventions, but none have resulted in sustained success. Both my cardiologist and endocrinologist have strongly recommended bariatric (metabolic) surgery, suggesting that it could potentially reverse my diabetes and significantly improve my cardiac function.
My sister underwent gastric bypass surgery five years ago and has had excellent outcomes. However, I am deeply concerned about the potential complications of surgery.
Given my complex medical background, I would like to know:
Which type of metabolic surgery would be most suitable for someone with my conditions?
What are the risks and complication rates associated with the recommended procedures?
How severe are the dietary restrictions post-surgery, and what kind of support is typically provided to help adjust to these changes?
Although I am afraid of undergoing surgery, I am equally fearful of the consequences of continuing on this path and the possibility of a shortened lifespan. I would truly appreciate a balanced, honest perspective to help guide my decision-making.
Kindly help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
I appreciate the detailed history you have shared. Based on the information provided, gastric bypass surgery would be the most appropriate option for you. Among the available metabolic procedures, it has one of the highest success rates for significant and sustained weight loss. It is also well-documented to be highly effective in improving and, in many cases, reversing type 2 diabetes and hypertension.
Given your complex medical profile, including diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnea, and recent cardiac issues, this surgery could offer substantial benefits for your overall health and quality of life.
I suggest you proceed with the recommended gastric bypass surgery under the guidance of a multidisciplinary team.
I hope this addresses your concerns. Please feel free to reach out if you have any further questions. I would be happy to assist you. Wishing you good health and a successful recovery.
Thank you.
