Is metabolic surgery safe for obese teenagers?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a mother of a 16-year-old daughter who has been struggling with obesity despite trying multiple diets and exercise programs. Her BMI (body mass index) is very high, and she has early signs of insulin resistance. I recently read about metabolic surgery for teenagers. How safe is it at this age, and what are the long-term effects? Would she still be able to grow properly, and how would this affect her hormone levels?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to iCliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Metabolic surgery, also known as bariatric surgery, may be a treatment option for adolescents with severe obesity and associated health conditions such as insulin resistance. However, it is typically considered only after lifestyle interventions, including medically supervised diets, physical activity programs, and behavioral therapy, have not been successful. The safety and long-term outcomes of metabolic surgery in teenagers are still being evaluated, but current research shows encouraging results.

These include significant improvements in body weight, insulin sensitivity, and overall cardiometabolic health. In terms of growth and hormonal regulation, metabolic surgery can have an impact. The procedure may alter nutrient absorption, which is essential for healthy growth and development during adolescence. It may also influence hormone levels, including those related to growth and reproduction. These effects are typically monitored closely and managed by a multidisciplinary healthcare team, including pediatric endocrinologists, dietitians, and surgeons.

I hope this helps.
