Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 14 years old, and I developed a lot of pimples last year. So I started using skin care products like foaming cleansers, toners (100% alcohol-free and organic), and facial moisturizers. Because of these, I am finally free from pimples, whenever I have my menstruation. My mom said that my products may cause melasma when I get older because I use too many products on my face. Is it true? She also mentioned that the astringent use had caused her friend to have melasma. Please help.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have read the query, and I can understand your concern.
Melasma is hyperpigmentation of the face and sun-exposed areas, and when induced by pregnancy, it is called chloasma. It is common in women, especially in their reproductive years. The exact cause is not known. Pregnancy, oral contraceptives, endocrinal dysfunction, medications, nutritional deficiency, and hepatic dysfunction are all said to contribute. It is exacerbated by exposure to sunlight and artificial UVA (ultraviolet A) and UVB. So in your case, I do not think any of the factors are present. The main cause of the condition is endocrinal dysfunction, which leads to hormonal imbalance. It can occur in any female with menstrual irregularities.
I hope this will help you.
Thank you.
