Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am 21 years old and beginning to suffer from mild male pattern baldness. There is mild hairline recession and hair thinning in the crown. I have decided to take 0.5 mg of Finasteride every other day to prevent further loss. I have done a lot of research on Finasteride, the biochemistry behind male pattern baldness, and the possible side effects of the drug. I know that finasteride blocks the conversion of free testosterone into DHT and that side effects are prevalent due to the free testosterone left over being converted into estrogen. However, I am wondering whether taking an aromatase inhibitor in conjunction with Finasteride will allow the drug to work while preventing any of the sexual side effects. Most studies have shown side effect prevalence to be very low, but some literature I have read suggests otherwise, so I wish to take precautions. My chosen aromatase inhibitor is Zinc, as I have read online about its efficacy. I am also taking palmetto, beta-sitosterol, and pumpkin seeds for their action on DHT levels. I am also using Ketoconazole shampoo. Will taking Finasteride with zinc prevent further hair loss and avoid side effects? Please help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have read your query, and I can understand your concern.
Since you are self-medicating for hair loss, doing it with half-knowledge can be dangerous. Finasteride is used for the treatment of androgenic alopecia. Unfortunately, zinc cannot prevent its side effects from occurring. Also, I suggest taking Finasteride 1 mg once a day for three months. You can use Minoxidil 2% hair spray for four to six months. It has been used by dermatologists to treat alopecia with much more positive results than Finasteride. Consult a specialist doctor and take these medicines with their consent.
I hope this helps.
Thank you and take care.
Regards.
