Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I was recently diagnosed with MAC lung disease, a condition I had never heard of before.
I have been dealing with a persistent cough for months and recently started coughing up blood. I have also lost about six pounds, and even simple household tasks leave me feeling exhausted.
Could you explain what it is and if it is something very serious?
My doctor has recommended long-term antibiotic therapy, but do I really need to be on antibiotics for that long?
Is there any way to permanently cure this?
I have a 4-year-old child; can I pass this on to him?
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have read your query and can understand your concern.
MAC lung disease, or Mycobacterium avium complex lung disease, is a chronic infection caused by bacteria commonly found in soil and water. While it can be serious if left untreated, it is important to know that with proper care, symptoms can be managed.
The long-term antibiotic therapy your doctors recommended is necessary because MAC bacteria grow slowly and are difficult to completely eliminate. Treatment usually involves a combination of antibiotics over an extended period, often 12 months or more, to ensure the infection is fully addressed.
While there is not a permanent cure, many people can manage the disease effectively and improve their quality of life with the right treatment. It is crucial to follow your doctor’s guidance closely throughout the process.
MAC lung disease is not contagious, so you cannot pass it on to your child. However, it is still important to practice good hygiene and avoid exposure to environments where the bacteria are commonly found, like soil and water.
If you would like more detailed information or have further questions, feel free to book a consultation with me.
I hope this answers your query.
Please let me know if I can assist you further.
