Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My vagina has been very itchy lately.
Can you help me understand why this might be happening and suggest some solutions to relieve the problem?
Kindly help
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Vaginal itching that lasts for more than a month is often caused by irritation or infection, and it is important to identify the exact reason before starting treatment.
The most common cause is a yeast infection (candidiasis), which leads to intense itching, redness, burning, and sometimes a thick white discharge.
Other possible causes include bacterial vaginosis, which usually has a grayish discharge with a fishy odor, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like trichomoniasis or chlamydia, or irritation from soaps, scented wipes, tight clothing, or poor hygiene.
Since the problem has persisted for over a month, you should visit a gynecologist for a pelvic examination and laboratory tests, such as a vaginal swab or urine test, to confirm the cause.
In the meantime, keep the area clean and dry, avoid using perfumed soaps or vaginal washes, wear loose cotton underwear, and avoid scratching.
If it is due to a yeast infection, we prescribe antifungal creams or oral medications such as Fluconazole, which usually work quickly once the diagnosis is confirmed.
However, it is best not to self-medicate without proper evaluation, as the wrong treatment can worsen the irritation or mask another infection.
I hope this helps.
Thank you and take care.
Regards.
